Belize
The reef, the jungle, and English-speaking ease
Belize pairs the world's second-largest barrier reef with jungles, Mayan ruins, and easygoing island life.
Overview
English-speaking and compact, Belize is a Caribbean-meets-Central-America country — diving and cayes in the east, jaguar reserves and ruins inland.
Why visit
Belize offers an unrivaled duality where you can snorkel the vibrant Hol Chan Marine Reserve in the morning and hike through dense, wildlife-rich jungles to ancient Mayan temples by afternoon. Its English-speaking population, Caribbean pace, and relative proximity to North America make it an accessible yet exotic escape for both adventurers and relaxation seekers.
Best time to travel
November–April for dry season. June–November is hurricane-prone but cheaper.
Major attractions
The Great Blue Hole, Caye Caulker, Caracol ruins, Xunantunich, and Hol Chan marine reserve.
Local transportation
Water taxis link Belize City to the cayes; small planes (Tropic Air) are quick and scenic. Shuttles reach the ruins inland.
Food & culture
Belizean cuisine is a rich fusion of Creole, Garifuna, and Maya influences, anchored by staples like coconut-infused rice and beans served with stewed chicken or fresh-caught fish. You will frequently encounter fry jacks for breakfast and hudut, a traditional coconut fish stew, for a deeper cultural experience. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory, and the overall dining atmosphere is delightfully unpretentious and casual.
Sample budget
Budget: $45–70/day. Mid-range: $100–180/day. Blue Hole flyover or dive $250–350.
Safety & practical tips
Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye are relaxed. Take care in Belize City (pass through rather than linger). Book reputable dive and cave operators.
